F. Scott

When reading about the Fitzgerald's, I came upon many interesting things. For example, it's easy to figure out that the "F" in "F. Scott" stands for Francis. But where does the name Francis Scott come from? Turns out he was named after a very distant cousin, Francis Scott Key. The name sounds familiar for some reason, doesn't it? Well, Fitzgerald's distant cousin was the writer of our very own National Anthem. The idea brought up by Nick in The Great Gatsby, that "...a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth" relates back to Fitzgerald. Like Nick, F. Scott is brought up into a rich family and therefore feels more entitled. He was expelled from his high school due to academic neglect, transferred to a Catholic school, graduated, got into Princeton, was put on academic probation, and finally dropped out of Princeton. Seems to me like he was taking too much advantage of his wealthiness, thinking that he would always have something to fall back on if anything went wrong. This idea is also portrayed in his later life, when he became a very successful writer. He partied all the time, but that ended up hurting him later in life. As he became less and less successful in his writing, he became more depressed. This caused him to turn to alcohol, which led to his early death. In the end, we can see how F. Scott's entitled ways caused him a great deal of sadness. and misfortune. I predict that the same will happen to Nick.

  1. I really like how you came to conclude the life of Jack from the life of Fitzgerald and I can really agree with it. It is also interesting to know that he got his name from the writer of the National Anthem. I also really like the way you connected the quote to your blog. I also think that Fitzgerald's wife was also one of the reasons for his depression which might also indicate that a women might bring sadness in the life of Nick.

  2. Anna, your comparison of Fitzgerald and Nick is really intriguing! Nick, seems to me, a fairly responsible person. However, the first three chapters of the novel have been filled with his stories of attending various parties. This is similar to how the Fitzgeralds were extravagant parties. Regarding your prediction of a woman bringing sadness into Nick’s life, this woman could be Jordan. In chapter three, she is described as being a dishonest person. Despite this, Nick continues seeing her, and this maybe result in Nick also going into a depression. Great blog post; it really made me think!
